How it works

A naturally occurring C-terminal tripeptide fragment of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), consisting of the amino acids Lysine, Proline, and Valine. KPV retains the anti-inflammatory bioactivity of the full α-MSH molecule while being small enough to cross the intestinal epithelium directly — meaning oral administration can achieve local gut mucosal effects without requiring injection. It inhibits pro-inflammatory signalling pathways (NF-κB, MAPK) in intestinal epithelial cells and macrophages, reduces mast cell degranulation, and promotes tight junction protein expression (reducing intestinal permeability). The localised gut action makes it specifically valuable for inflammatory bowel conditions where systemic anti-inflammatory drugs carry significant side effects.

Research summary

Developed from research into melanocortin peptides and gut inflammation. Pre-clinical studies demonstrate significant reduction of colitis severity in mouse models, including DSS-induced colitis and TNBS colitis — the standard inflammatory bowel disease models. Mechanism research published by Bhatt and Bhave (2020) confirmed direct epithelial barrier protection via tight junction upregulation. Human data is limited to early-phase safety observations. Growing use in integrative medicine for IBS, leaky gut syndrome, and IBD support alongside established gut healing protocols. Oral form is uniquely advantageous for gut-specific applications.

How this connects to your protocol

L-glutamine — an amino acid from dietary protein — is the primary fuel for gut enterocytes. This directly supports BPC-157's mechanism of action. High-quality protein sources also supply glycine, critical for collagen repair.
