Are peptides legal in Australia? The complete 2025 regulatory guide

The short answer

Most therapeutic peptides in Australia are Schedule 4 (prescription-only) medicines under the TGA's Poisons Standard. This means they are legal to possess and use — but only when prescribed by an AHPRA-registered medical practitioner and dispensed by a licensed Australian compounding pharmacy. Purchasing them without a prescription or importing from overseas without authorisation is not compliant with Australian law.

What changed in 2023?

Prior to 2023, a grey market of domestic 'research use only' suppliers operated in Australia. In 2023, the TGA significantly tightened enforcement — the outgoing TGA head noted a $10 million court case win against peptides sold online with no medical doctor involvement. Domestic research chemical suppliers largely ceased operations following this enforcement action.

Which peptides are Schedule 4?

Schedule 4 (prescription-only) classification applies to: BPC-157, TB-500, Ipamorelin, CJC-1295, Sermorelin, AOD-9604, Semaglutide, and PT-141. Schedule 4 means these substances are legal to use in Australia only when prescribed by an AHPRA-registered medical practitioner and dispensed by a TGA-licensed compounding pharmacy using approved starting materials.

The compounding pharmacy pathway

Because most peptides are not registered therapeutic goods, they are accessed via the compounding exemption. A registered doctor assesses the patient, determines clinical need, and writes a prescription. The prescription is filled by a licensed compounding pharmacy, which manufactures the peptide to order using pharmaceutical-grade raw materials. This is the only fully compliant pathway for peptide access in Australia.
