How it works

A naturally occurring 28-amino acid peptide secreted by thymic epithelial cells, with levels that decline progressively with age (thymic involution). Thymosin Alpha-1 modulates multiple arms of the immune system: it increases T-lymphocyte maturation and function, enhances NK (natural killer) cell activity, promotes dendritic cell differentiation, and upregulates interferon-γ and interleukin-2 production. Its net effect is a restoration of competent immune surveillance — the ability of the immune system to identify and eliminate abnormal cells, viral pathogens, and chronic infections. Unlike immunosuppressants or indiscriminate immune stimulants, Thymosin Alpha-1 is a modulator — it restores balance rather than forcing up-regulation.

Research summary

Approved as a pharmaceutical (Zadaxin/Thymalfasin) in 35+ countries including Italy, China, and the Philippines for treatment of hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and as an adjunct in cancer chemotherapy to reduce immunosuppression. Over 75 clinical trials published. A landmark Italian study demonstrated significantly improved immune reconstitution in HIV-positive patients. Extensively used in Asian oncology for immune support during chemotherapy — reduces infection complications and improves treatment tolerance. Increasingly used in longevity medicine as a preventive immune optimisation tool in individuals with declining T-cell function.

Cycle duration

6–12 months for immune restoration; 2× per year for maintenance

How this connects to your protocol

Higher protein intake in adults over 35 is the strongest dietary intervention against sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss). GH peptide protocols amplify the benefit — but only if protein substrate is available.

Targets are evidence-based estimates. Consult your practitioner for personalised advice.

Risks & side effects

Generally very well tolerated — one of the safest peptides in clinical use
Mild injection site reactions
Theoretical concern about over-stimulating autoimmune conditions — screen before prescribing in autoimmune disease
Not TGA-registered as a standalone product — compounding or importation pathway required
