How it works

A synthetic dipeptide that is metabolised in the body to cycloprolylglycine — an endogenous neuropeptide. Noopept modulates AMPA-type glutamate receptors (enhancing fast synaptic transmission), increases BDNF and NGF expression in the hippocampus, and reduces glutamate-induced excitotoxicity. It demonstrates anxiolytic and neuroprotective properties alongside its nootropic effects. Unlike racetam compounds, it crosses the blood-brain barrier extremely efficiently and is active at doses approximately 1,000 times lower than piracetam.

Research summary

Developed at the Zakusov Institute of Pharmacology in Russia in the 1990s. Multiple published studies in cognitive impairment models and mild cognitive disorder in humans. A 2014 trial demonstrated significant improvement in cognitive function in patients with mild cognitive impairment. NGF and BDNF upregulation confirmed in hippocampal tissue studies. Widely used in Russian clinical practice for cognitive enhancement and neurological recovery. The most commonly used nootropic peptide globally.

How this connects to your protocol

Amino acids are precursors to neurotransmitters including dopamine, serotonin, and acetylcholine. Adequate protein supports the cognitive benefits of your nootropic protocol.

Risks & side effects

May cause irritability or brain fog at higher doses
Headache reported — often addressed with choline supplementation
Legal grey area in Australia — classification varies
Limited long-term human safety data
Should not be combined with stimulants without medical supervision
